The Highway Cleanup
Our mission with "The Highway Cleanup is:
Give our communities a clean home.
While ending trash buildup in our city is not immediately attainable, we believe that we can establish a presence within the community to bring more eco-friendly awareness. Bringing in youth and adults alike to a common mission of cleaning up our communities is the starting point for a pro-environmental mindset.
Using social media and personal experiences, our goal is to reduce trash buildup within the community by setting the example for community peers. Spreading the word that people from our own community are taking time out of their day to make sure our homes are clean.
We've seen a 60% reduction of trash buildup at the highway exits we have worked in (measured by volume of trash bags filled from each month). We have been able to bring in influential artists from the communities to help bring awareness and used the interactions to crowdfund supplies for trash bags, tools, food for volunteers, and high visibility clothing for volunteers.
We've been blessed to get some exposure from news outlets like Latinos en Michigan TV and Metro Detroit News to spread the awareness of our movement.
